Mike, Another ploy which can help is to moisten the parking pad (visible on the right when the head is moved to the left) with neat window cleaner, and leave overnight. I prefer the type with non-ionic surfactant, but ammonia (e.g. Windolene) has been used by many.
As indicated earlier, you must get perfect geometry with the nozzle tests. With anything less suspect clogging. Alas, I do not know any diagnostic tests for other ills. That said, it is worth measuring a print to check whether it prints exactly the size requested. I think you get near millimeter accuracy. Errors would indicate head or drive stepping inaccuracy. I find on my 1160, even when I have perfect head alignment, bi-directional (high speed) printing causes grainy prints. Printers are lovely when they work properly, but they can cause grief, particularly if you have deadline.
