Another ploy which can help is to moisten the parking pad (visible on the
right when the head is moved to the left) with neat window cleaner, and
leave overnight. I prefer the type with non-ionic surfactant, but ammonia
(e.g. Windolene) has been used by many.

As indicated earlier, you must get perfect geometry with the nozzle tests.
With anything less suspect clogging. Alas, I do not know any diagnostic
tests for other ills. That said, it is worth measuring a print to check
whether it prints exactly the size requested. I think you get near
millimeter accuracy. Errors would indicate head or drive stepping
inaccuracy.

I find on my 1160, even when I have perfect head alignment, bi-directional
(high speed) printing causes grainy prints.

Printers are lovely when they work properly, but they can cause grief,
particularly if you have deadline.
