Every now and then a second hand flextight appears on
the for sale list - what model should I consider? I've been told that I
should expect to pay around 4000 to 5000 for something 'decent' but
without model advice! And would the quality be significantly greater
than the Minolta 5400 or Nikon 8000ED?

Paul,

I have used a Nikon 8000ED for two years now, but recently bought a used
343. The quality from the 343 is well ahead of the 8000ED, the definition
is far superior, and it handles even contrasty transparency film like Velvia
with ease. With the Nikon 8000ED I was often forced to scan the same film
frame twice, at two different light intensities to capture detail in both
the highlight and shadow areas.

I bought a used 343 from Bodoni, all in cost about 5000, and have no
regrets at having done so. To be confident that I was spending money
wisely I sent a transparency that I had had a great deal of trouble scanning
on the 8000. As soon as I saw the result I made my mind up there and then
to buy it.

At the time I posed the same question to the list as you, specifically re
the 343, and was told, go for it! I did, and no regrets!
