Russell, Thanks for your fulsome reply, I had already done all of the things you suggested and knew about the memory allocation issue (1.5gb James, thanks).
The problem is intermittent and not dependent on file size. Photoshop just seems to hang for up to a minute or so. Michael at Profile-Lab had suggested that there might be a Unix script that helped, but I'm awaiting a reply at the moment. I haven't noticed any speed difference in filters, 8 or16 bit, in fact I've found that rendering and saving has generally speeded up, that's what makes this intermittent problem so frustrating.
