Hi Keith/All

This might not apply to everyone on the list but a few areas of
experience which might be worth looking into when getting the new
contract.

I'd advise checking with your insurance company about the status of your
cover if you travel abroad. My insurance company, snivelling duplicitous
and contemptible thieves that they are, never bothered to advise me that
they have personally classified Zimbabwe as being in a state of 'civil
war' and were unwilling to indemnify me. The Foreign Office doesn't
recognise this classification although it advises against unnecessary
travel. Normally, I am fully insured under international cover for
periods of 30 days abroad at a time and am aware of the standard terms
of force majeure so would have made alternative arrangements.

I'd also suggest that you check the policy regarding what constitutes
security in a locked vehicle. I was prompted to check my policy at the
suggestion of a friend who had suffered a loss and the standard terms
declared that he was indemnified if the boot could only be opened with a
key externally. Most modern cars offer the 'convenience' of fold down
back seats for greater flexibility but insurance companies view this as
a risk because it makes it easier to access the contents of the boot via
a smashed side window.

I'm in a coffee shop at the moment so don't have all the details to hand
although I can provide them if requested. I also recall a recent issue
of Professional Photographer doing a feature on insurance companies and
a new one had started up specifically for pro shooters. I have no
experience of this new company but can pass the details on for anyone
interested when I'm back home. Just drop me a note on list or privately.

Kind regards

Alex
