I had this same problem some years ago so I had a local sheet metal work
company make me a large hinged steel box which when bolted to the floor of
the car could be secured with two padlocks (only cost 50 pounds at the time
but it has given me immense peace of mind over the last five years). I'm
just about to buy a new car but it will still be worth having another
"strong" box custom made for the new vehicle.

Unfortunately most photographic insurance policies do not allow equipment to
be left in vehicles overnight so I am still forced to lug heavy bags from
the car into hotels at night.
