I have a lacie 160g external hard drive, running on mac os 9.2 ( i know, i

The hard drive is partitioned in to three equal sections

partition throws up the message:

'This disk is unreadable by this computer, do you want to initialise?'

Disk first aid reads
'invalid BTnee node size 3,0'

hi ben
i think you'll find stuff on this in the archives. i had a similar problem months ago, which happened on 2 occasions. below are some of the postings i kept from various helpful pro-diggers. i think it's fine to post them again.
i think you'll find that this sort of thing happens far too often for lacie external drives to be regarded as reliable storage. i now use them along with other means of back-up storage.
disk warrior is always worth trying.

good luck

One of my 200Gb D2 drives failed in April.
The 200Gb drives have a 0.5% failure rate according to laCie

A bit late coming to this thread as I've been away ... but my external
180GB
LaCie HD just crashed a short while ago. It cannot be 'mounted', all I
get
is asked whether to initialize it or not (and lose all my backed up
data).
How do I go about recovering the data from it? And can it be used
again (and
be relied on!) if it's re-initialized?

I had this trouble with a 120gb Lacie firewire drive which could note be
mounted

The problem was that the drive was not secured properly in the drive casing,
this then obviously caused physical damage to the disc. Lacie did replace it
though works fine now.

i found this out by picking the thing up and hearing it rattle or clunk when
I tried to reconnect the FW cables....!

Don't recommend that you try to shake the thing about, but...if you pick it
up and rotate the case, see if it clunks (the sound of the drive hitting the
inside of the casing)....

Also had FW cable trouble with one cable supplied, so try replacing the
cable to see if this was the problem.

This is one of two problems: failure of the firewire bridge in which case
Paul / Michael's solutions will work or worst case: failure of the hard
drive spindle bearings which explains itself....
Hope for your sake it is the former.

Simple solution is to remove the drive and connect it directly to the IDE
cable .
and use the Disc manufacturers bootable floppy ( Downloadable from their
website ) to examine the drive.
There are a number of options open to you if the drive is reported as Ok.One
is to use the same bootable floppy to copy the drive to anther one or to use
a file recovery software from someone like
www.LC-Tech.com .
If your drive is working ok you should be able to recover everything.

how about posting the drive?

www.peak-uk.com +44 1489 796979 if their tech support doesnt answer you problems ask for Kevin Bordley, he recovered a full 60 gig drive for us last year, it was away for only a few days.

They do have software you can buy to recover yourself.
