The drive may well be completely OK. Try the recovery process using Disk Warrior before doing anything more complex. HFS is the way to go, and it was most likely in that format from the start.

micro anvika have offered a refund for the drive. If I buy a copy of disc
warrior and a new drive then hopefully I'll be sorted.
Now, do you know the difference between the 400 and the 800 drives, will
they both run on panther.
This is not an operating system issue, but simply the hardware you are running on, but from other comments you have made I can deduce that your machine would require a Firewire 800 card to be able to get full benefit from the higher speed, but do not let that put you off, future proof yourself by getting the one which also has the 800 capability, so long as it still has two 400 ports.
