Sorry to hear you have the problem of a lost partition. I would purchase a copy of Disk Warrior, and run this. It works in a manner that is most likely to recreate the underlying catalogue for your disc.
I have copied part of your email to point up a few more suggestions related to what you wrote.

I have a lacie 160g external hard drive, running on mac os 9.2 ( i know, i
know, but all I hear is problems with panther so far)
You must bear in mind that there will always be a larger number of brickbats than bouquets. Panther is a new operating system, and less is known of its peccadilloes, but basically it is a worthwhile step, and most importantly for a photographer, it will open up the opportunity for you to really use the best version of Photoshop. You are missing its added simplicity (in small ways), its added versatility in numerous ways, such as the File Browser and AdobeCameraRAW.
The hard drive is partitioned in to three equal sections
I would consider adding an extra drive for your added peace of mind.
Don't do that yet - see above, but most importantly stop using the drive until you have sorted things, you may end with NO partitions!
Yesterday I transferred some files around, and this morning the third partition throws up the message:
'This disk is unreadable by this computer, do you want to initialise?'
Disk first aid reads
'invalid BTnee node size 3,0'
Does anyone know what the blazes is going on!
I have no other disk repair software, as I understand norton is more hastle
than its worth.
Yes, there do seem to be concerns that Norton has not kept up with all the System changes, and there are now better alternatives such as TechTool Pro and Disk Warrior, but a good insurance policy is to get them all, because each does things differently and sometimes one will solve a problem the other was unable to fix, or sometimes even detect!
Good Luck, read in a more balanced fashion and see if you can afford an additional drive. Oh, and do not be afraid to consider Panther - a tip here: Put Panther on your new disc, and when you wish to check it out make it the Startup Drive, when you are used to it and have everything, like printing all sewn up, then switch this into being your main drive. This way you always have your old trusted MacOS 9 alongside - (provided Disk Warrior sorted the lost partition!)
