Stephen:

The additional file size of the standard jpeg is due to the "metadata 
overhead" and colorspace ICC profile. The FILEINFO/XMP/IPTC/EXIF data is 
probably a good chunk of the overhead, as the sRGB profile of most devices 
isn't that large. Since you are dealing with a digital camera file there is 
EXIF data without a doubt. If you have put your contact info, caption, etc. 
then that adds to the overhead as well. 

Save For Web in all versions before CS typically chucked all this metadata and 
profile info out in order to get the smallest file possible.

With CS there is the opportunity to save various parts of this metadata, but 
you will need to delve into the help file to find the exact location of the 
different options toggles. 

Personally I'd caution again ditching the metadata, especially if you need to 
provide caption/contact information this way.
