I am interested in hearing what the advantages or disadvantages are of a multishot back over a scan back, apart from the ability to use it for instant capture shooting

Hi Richard,

Francis (Newman) pretty much sums it up .

We tried a scanning back when we were first looking at Digital Capture. INMHO they are ideal for images where you need high resolution combined with low depth of field .Ideal for copying paintings etc , but if you need more DOF then you need pretty powerful continuous light sources. I know that several car photographers have raised concerns in the past with this.

The best lighting solution for the use of these backs is probably something like HMIs, powerful but reasonably cool. Then again , some people swear by Kineflo.

Paul Webster , the Fab Food Smudger , will be able to enlighten us more on this subject as he has plenty of experience with scanning backs on still life ( I do of course reserve the right here to endlessly harass him here on the subject of foodies and drop / shallow focus.I mean.....why would any contemporary food photographer need a large depth of field :-) !!

Seriously though , I'm sure that good chap that he is , Paul will respond on this , and as he also has instant capture devices he'll also be best served to compare the two when using them on a daily basis.

We went the single/ multishot route for a number of reasons. Speed of capture , ability to "scan" using flash with the associated image quality ( no colour interpolation and where absolutely necessary huge file sizes (using 16 shot or preferably the Sinar Macroscan adapter), the ability to freeze action and the elegance of the system on offer to name a few.Of course all of this also comes at a price , and the continuous scanning backs offer many more pixels per buck here, and in some cases many more pixels full stop.

I'm sure that there will be quite a few scanning back users on the forum who can fill us in the other benefits of such systems.

Regards,

Bob Marchant.
