Hi folks; long time no talk.

Good to see your name on the list again Paul

I'm looking for help choosing a printer. I've had an Epson 1290 for a couple of years which, although a great printer, I've been unlucky with and am about to dump, literally.

What I want it for is printing fine art landscapes with the intention of selling them to the public. I'm torn between two paths: one is getting an 1160 with maybe a CIS and Lyson inks and maybe, when I can afford it, a custom profile. The other is something off the shelf, maybe a Canon i9100.

You may be aware of one Prodiger who had a banding or whatever you want to call it problem with his 9100 about six months ago. He returned it after getting nowhere with Canon. I have to say that our Canon W2200 has been absolutely faultless over an eight month or so period producing really superb work. We have never done a nozzle clean in all that time but it is not the consumer model the 9100 is of course. The Canon does not use long life inks.

I'm worried that the Canon won't print the dense blacks that I know the Epson will though.

Cannot say on that score but from the prints I saw of the 9100 the blacks were good...not sure how they compare with the Epson though.

I'm also worried that the 1160 won't be up to the sort of dot-free results that are commonplace these days, although I suspect it will be...

Well when compared between the Epson 5000 we had with the Epson 1160 there was hardly any difference but the 5000 to our Canon 2200 is dramatic.

All the best
