Jonathan, If you partition a drive its not a performance benefit as the reading head still has to travel to that physical sector of the drive. Given that a new hard drive costs so little these days its a real benefit to stuff a couple more in the system and as Richard K mentions have discs dedicated to scratch and paging files. Ive just bought a new case because it will take 6 hard drives in 3.5 bays plus my removable archive drive in a caddy using one of the 5" bays, with well designed ventilation via 7 built in fans its also much quieter than the old one.
