Oh, I should add that if your "GameBoy" displays such colours that you are pleased with, and you can reproduce them in a printing device what's wrong with that?
Dear Inno
I am not adding this final offering because I feel it's particularly mind blowing in any way, but it is from the real world of producing images where the very best result is demanded. There are few customers more demanding than photographers, especially when they are paying out hard earned money<G>
If I put our quality Toshiba laptop with an "adjusted" screen next to a calibrated 19" Samsung LCD and view one of our drum scans on it, it makes the laptop look like crap. (The Samsung is for internet use BTW) Also the laptop image changes in appearance dependent on how you are looking at it. Yes the position you view the Samsung also alters the appearance of the image, but is far less critical. However I would not dare to even think of doing colour editing on the Samsung, let alone the laptop.
Set the Samsung against our very nice Sony 24" CRT or one of the 22" LaCie's and the difference is in another world altogether. Whilst the image is not as sharp as the Samsung it has beautiful gradation and an appearance of a full colour gamut. Not only that but the appearance of the scan is not effected if you move your viewing position as one is apt to do, and the additional screen space is very significant to how one is able to work!
Now put that same file up on the Sony Artisan screen, again a CRT but with a far higher design spec and calibrated/profiled with a system designed for that particular phosphor set and what do you see. You see slightly nicer tonal separation in the darker areas and an overall slight improvement in the tonal gradation....Ok it also has other benefits not really relevant to this conversation.
Now its obviously horses for courses. You find a laptop suits you...that's fine, but I have the distinct feeling that much of what you have been saying has been to justify your own position, rather than taking on board the reasons most of us here consider this a non starter for professional work. All of the foregoing is based purely on what I see on a range of screens we have here.....all excellent in their own right. Steve Upton and others have provided the scientific reasons why I am seeing what I am seeing.
Seeing is believing. Perhaps one day you would care to visit us and set up your laptop alongside the screens here, and see just what a confining visual world you are subjecting yourself to.
Best wishes
