Brian: Since you are also dealing with Word files, I'd suggest something like Extensis Portfolio. Ideally you may be better off with one product for "image database" chores and another for textual based info, but that is changing. Extensis Portfolio 7 will be the first to offer XMP support, and from what I understand, the ability to "write" XMP data back to a number of image file formats. Since Adobe has included the option to embed XMP metadata into PDF's as well, this may be the way to go. iView Media Pro has a public beta out for review right now. The download address was posted on the ProDig and ControlledVocabulary Forums a while back, or you can contact iView directly.
