At drupa 2004 (May 6th to 19th in Düsseldorf, Germany), the world’s
premier trade show for the printing industry, Eizo Nanao Corporation (“EIZO”) will introduce an
engineering sample of a 22.2-inch LCD monitor with a wide color gamut that covers the Adobe RGB
color space. This vast range of displayable colors gives professionals in graphic design, photography and
printing both a much truer representation of their images as well as accurate color matching with other
peripherals compared to conventional monitors. EIZO further enhances the color performance with its
latest ASIC (application specific integrated circuit), featuring 14-bit calculation for balanced and accurate
rendition of color and grayscales tones, especially in the darker areas of an image.

With full support for the Adobe RGB color space and 96% for NTSC, EIZO’s wide color gamut monitor
offers a greater range of displayable colors – in particular saturated greens and cyans – compared to
conventional monitors, which typically have a color gamut approximately equal to the sRGB color space.
This wide color gamut monitor should be a boon to monitor-based proofing which is quickly becoming an
alternative to film-based proofing as graphics professionals and their clients continually seek to cut costs
and shorten production times. The Adobe RGB color space covers the color gamut available from most
CMYK printers, so graphics professionals can adjust color and be confident that what they see on screen
will match the printed product. Additionally, many high-end digital cameras include an Adobe RGB mode,
so photos taken in this mode can be reproduced on screen without color loss.
LCD technology has made significant gains in closing the image quality gap with CRT monitors in recent
years. However, one area where LCD monitors still lag behind is in the display of darker tones, which can
often exhibit banding. EIZO brings the display of these darker tones into line with CRT monitors with its
newly developed ASIC. This integrated circuit features 14-bit calculation to produce a palette of 1,021
tones for red, green, and blue from which the most appropriate 256 are displayed.
The wide 22.2-inch screen and 1920 × 1200 resolution displays two A4 sized documents simultaneously
at 100% size with additional room for a tool palette. This saves time for pre-press and color proofing as
imaging professionals can see their work at actual size without having to move windows and palettes
around the desktop.
EIZO expects to begin mass production of this wide color gamut LCD monitor in October of this year. It
will become the flagship model in the company’s ColorEdge series of LCD monitors targeted specifically
for color graphics professionals. EIZO is developing a new version of its ColorNavigator™ calibration
software, which will provide hardware calibration of the monitor when used with EIZO’s CX1
colorimeter or select GretagMacbeth® Eye-One® products.

Bob Marchant.
