Personally I think this is an on list topic but I prepare to be 'batted'.

My two penneth on image stabilisation is that they are well worth the money if you don't have to worry so much about separating the subject from the foreground. I use a 100-400mm LIS as my every day long and I regularly 'get away with' 1/60 at 400mm hand held! Admittedly this is really pushing it and its only ever done when there are no alternatives such as a pod or a faster shutter speed or higher ISO but it can work.

My shooting assistant has a 28-135 that I've tinkered with on the 10d and MkII and it works fine, in fact its probably going to be added to the kit bag instead of a 70-200 (non IS) that I was planning.
