I'd suggest a mirrored array (Raid 1) which requires a minimum of 2 drives. All data is written identically to both drives. Dear Kevin,

That's what I was using and caused the problem! It's also what Lacie were trying to tell me. If there is a hardware fault then the other data (should be) recoverable. However, if there is a catalogue or root level problem, this will be mirrored to both drives, (theoretically) losing both sets of data.

I have now separated the big discs, updated the Lacie Firmware (now available), and am going to use Jack Lowe's suggestion of ChronoSync to watch and back up each drive separately.

It has been a VERY scary experience but if nothing else, it shows that no one back up system is going to be fail safe. I've just bought a new G5 for the DVD RW drive and the increased working speed, I think my old G4 450 was struggling anyway! I will now be backing-up all data on DVD as well as the Lacie Drives.

Thanks,

Glyn
