Striped - is when you have several disks merged into one and data can be written across disks (so not dissimilar to what LaCie are doing).

So one file could be split between the two discs? Therefore if one disc goes down, data could be lost?

But RAID 5 is a pretty standard way of ensuring some sort of mirror - it is used on servers round the world. So it can't be that bad! It is just advisable to use 2 separate unique Hard Drives.
Wish I'd known in first place. I may have spent more on unique single discs.

If you keep 2 separate disks then some sort of mirroring app (File Synchroniser) might be an idea.
