Generally you will find the RAID software is smart enough to stop the mirror when there is a fault at the catalogue/root level.

But otherwise there shouldn't be a problem - other than as previously mentioned with these bigger LaCie drives which are a RAID in themselves.

It is a system used on countless servers throughout the world, so it isn't something to worry about.
