CD's do not seem to me to be an easy solution
DVDs are a possibility - larger capacity. But then you have competing formats as well, which makes life harder!
Now given that hard drive space is getting ever cheaper and one can now buy a 500 GB drive for about 230 it strikes me that the best way to keep one's data is by buying 2 such drives for archive and backup.
If it is a LaCie 500GB drive be warned that there have been some problems with these - they are 2 x 250GB drives RAIDed together to produce 1 500GB disk, and if the RAID fails your data might disappear!
The largest I know of is 250GB but I have seen a 400GB announced.
