David. I'm not familiar with Mac or LaCie gear but in my PC experience when 
equipment
starts to crash it has always been down to hard drive failure.
It could be just a couple of sectors that need reassigning.
In the PC I use the hard drive manufacturers software.which can be downloaded 
from their
web sites.
Its proven the best way for me and usually results in a restored drive or a 
report that
the drive needs replacing and an error code given enabling a swap under 
warranty direct
from manufacturer with no hassle.
