Hello,
Many thanks for all who helped with their comments. Much appreciated.
I've downloaded the Firmware update that has very recently been placed (16th
Nov) on LaCies website and reformatted the 'lost' original Hard Drive. After
Copying all the data across from the back-up HD to the restored HD I then
attempted to update the Firmware on the back-up Hard drive in a similar
fashion.
This has resulted in me now loosing the second Back-Up Hard Drive ! LaCies
updater tool informed me it had failed in updating the firmware and the HD
cannot be mounted or be seen by Apples Disc Utility.
Although I have not lost data (I hope) yet - I have lost use of both LaCie
500 D2 Hard Drives in 2 days : Not good.
Any suggestions on how to get Apple Disc Utility / DiscWarrior to even 'see'
it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have several drives all LaCie. You can daisy chain them but they don't seem to like it.
Thanks for all this good advice Patrick. I'll have to stop making daisy chains then...silly old me - what was I thinking of !
The grey screen crash your getting is a kernel panic which I have seen with multi linked hard drives. If you are scanning to one of the external drives at the end of the chain you could be creating trouble.
Guilty as charged your honour ! That’s exactly what I was doing. And with a
SSCI scanner.
If you have the space put another firewire card in the Mac and do as little daisy chaining as possible. HTH. Patrick.
I'll get one on order tomorrow.
Thank you all.
Best wishes, David
