Can anyone suggest where to look to find out how to set up an FTP area on
my website for individual clients to up/download images from using
specific user names/passwords?
And somewhat related to this, where to look to find out how to create a
secure, user name /password only access area for clients to simply view
webpages of images?
Tariq,
The short answer to this is 'yes' I did it / have done it and it worked well (past) BUT.....
Beware who you use for hosting!!
I used a big name hosting provider who happily sold me 2Gb of web space. I used a small fraction of this for 18months ( max of about 150Mb) without any problem, storing and providing image files for clients.
A couple of weeks ago, I used 750Mb for less than 24 hours ( I paid for 2Gb). I received a very offensive mail from the 'Abuse' department which contained no explanation of what I had done wrong but it informed me that my domain was disabled. Files were not reachable and my email (accounts provided as part of the package) was down for 48 hours without any warning.
Apparently the small print on the T&C stated that only files forming an active part of the web site were allowed on the server and that no storage was allowed. Despite the fact that I had been doing this in total ignorance for 18 months I never received warning that I was in breach of the T&Cs until the domain was disabled
The company was Fasthosts, so do not go near them!!
If you can find a host who will allow storage, the procedure is to set up a password protected folder on the server which can then be set up as a sub domain ie download.tariqdajani.com. This is done through the control panel and is quick to set up. No special software is needed except a good ftp program. Transmit works well on the mac BTW.
