Sure, it's possible. The Navy turns sailors into nuclear power plant
operators in 24 weeks. Twenty-four very intense weeks. But they
don't put them in charge right away. (They don't let them touch
anything right away.) And they start with a pretty select group.
So, start with kids coming out of the excellent schools India's been
building for a generation (as we were told about in The Decline and
Fall of the American Programmer), and put them in intense, full-time,
night-and-day classes on Java, SQL, DotNet and then turn them loose
on the world. They go into jobs at the bottom rung, responsible for
making coffee and answering the phones and work their way up.
I'll wager those kids get more and better quality training than a lot
of us did.
Working with a pair of them today they are very intelligent. They have
spoken about why they moved to the USA. Work! There is a surplus of very
brilliant people and each year the universities are pumping out a new batch.
They have a great work ethic, in that they work on Fri. night, and don't
party like we Americans. Sat. they are up early working on their side
projects to get better. Where Americans are taking it slow because they
deserve the break.
Every culture has some brilliant, intelligent folks, and the notion that
foreigners have moreso than America is wrong, imo. HOWEVER, you may
have a point about the culture for enjoyment---those folks work 6
days/wk, 10-12 hrs/day, and there's no way in heck that an American (or
ANYONE for that matter) should have to do that to live. "All work and
no play makes Johnny/Mohammed a dull person" (...not to mention leads to
burnout quicker). Some foreigners hate us because of the things we
enjoy....freedom being one of those things......
