There is a lot of good to use consultants when man resources get lean. 
You can only do so much and the company won't hire someone to help you.
 The previous guy probably quit because of the workload and management
thought that he wasn't strong enough.  :)

I have 2 consultants in to assist me in getting Win2003 / SS2005
clustering working properly, as well as getting a lot of network issues
cleaned up so my system will act as I scoped it out on paper.

I have a fiber line between my host and my office that is still unused
in 'bits' since March of this year.  My Network admin can't figure out
why.

The DBA that I brought in specialized in remote security systems for
Middle East oil production systems.  He has a different approach to
what secure is!  I am learning a great deal on the little points.
