This can be a very deep philosophical issue. To stretch a point: You visit
the doctor because you have a pain in your foot. He examines you, determines
it is a splinter, removes it, applies a topical antiseptic, bandages it, and
prescribes an antibiotic and soak therapy. Does that make you an M.D.?

I am always amazed when people tell me, "We don't need a network admin; Joe
takes care of it." Joe is officially the bookkeeper so even though he is the
admin, the help desk, and the repairman, management does not have a clue. And
Joe won't admit he is overworked because L. Cheapo, his boss, won't believe him.

The squeaking wheel gets the grease. But the real trick is to be able to
squeak without people thinking you are just complaining about working too hard.

=> That really isn't a technology problem but a management problem. :)
=>
=> But you already knew that. Some managers just don't want to
=> admit that their company can't be profitable if they staff
=> it properly. So they keep positions/depts undermanned and
=> lurch from crisis to crisis. It's always someone else's
=> fault, of course.

=> Two key words here: "Technology transfer".
=>
=> Whenever I go in to build an app for someone, I emphasize
=> that I'm not interested in keeping them on an annuity leash
=> for the next ten years of their life. Part of my job is to
=> explain what I did, so that they're not tied to me. Reduces
=> the number of calls I get at 3 am. :)
=>
=> Like the article said, a consultant who won't educate their
=> client is looking out for themselves more than their client.
=>
=> Of course, that IS the goal of many consulting companies.
