If I misquote Bob, I'm truly sorry - it's not on purpose.

No you quoted me OK.

You mean you really

Republican yucking it up with a few friends at the dorm, at the
expense of some log cabin RINO? Then realizing what a world of shit
he's put himself and his party in when The Other Side gets ahold of
it the ball and jogs it into the end zone during a critical election

Are you being serious?

I was semi-serious.

Did you read the transcripts? http://abcnews.go.com/images/WNT/ 02-02-03b.pdf
Or are we not talking about the same transcripts?

There is a lot of context you DON'T see in any two or three sentence back-and-forth exchange. I would suggest to you that the Congressman felt comfortable asking such an insane question with such reckless abandon for a reason, and there are other exchanges in which the page was blowing him virtual kisses and otherwise leading him on. Whether it was the same page or a different one I don't know, but if this is the one admitting to a prank, I think it's not unreasonable to assume that meant he was SOMEHOW prodding Foley into denuding his real intentions, so to speak.

That having been said, that Foley is a sicko, and that the leadership was grossly negligent at the very least in their dealing with him is beyond reasonable doubt. And the page, if he in ANY way contributed to the conversation in this light (and some of the transcripts clearly indicate the page was, er, on the same page as Foley), then he's a dumbass too.

Regarding the page(s?) "goading" Foley:
Xxxxxxxxx (7:46:07 PM) : oh ok
Xxxxxxxxx (7:46:11 PM) : have fun campaigning
Xxxxxxxxx (7:46:17 PM) : or however you spell it
Xxxxxxxxx (7:46:18 PM) : lol
Xxxxxxxxx (7:46:25 PM) : ill see ya in a couple of weeks
Maf54 (7:46:33 PM) : did any girl give you a haand job this weekend

Yeah, boy! *That's* as clear a case of goading as I've ever seen! A perfectly appropriate and witty comeback from Foley, IMHO.

I'm not defending Foley on any level. He's scum of the earth and not because he's gay per se, but because he's a pervert, per se. there are lots of straight perverts who do it; some of them have even been President.

And as far as the "Dorm boys" go (and here's where I think we must be talking about different transcripts)
Xxxxxxxxx (8:10:54 PM) : brb...my mom is yelling
Maf54 (8:11:06 PM) : ok
Xxxxxxxxx (8:14:02 PM) : back
Maf54 (8:14:37 PM) : cool hope se didnt see any thing

Yeah, 'cause when I was in college, my mom used to wander in all the time. lol brb wtf?

Seriously, this is NOT a case of "slimy Republicans". It's just slimy, period, regardless of party. And yeah, the opposing party is going to make the most of it, just as the Republicans will do (and should do!) *when* a Democrat gets caught doing the same thing. It would be exactly as slimy if it had been a Democrat. I think to try and blame the uproar on party grounds doesn't make sense, and I hope I'm entirely wrong in my impression that that's what you've decided to do.
Ok, your turn. :-)

I would just point out that there is a whole lot more to the exchange than what you quoted, and that the "children" these days are hardly innocent lamb; many of them (the ones destined for either fame or infamy, like Ms Lewinsky and this page, apparently---the next Carville and Matalin, perhaps?) are just younger versions of the same power-hungry, lustful, megalomaniacal sub-species we call "politicians".

It's sad but it's true, and we'd be naive to focus only on the former Congressman's behavior. I frankly find the behavior of any Washington intern or page or whatever who's anywhere in the vicinity of 18 years old who engages in this kind of thing with politicians and staffers just as repugnant, and indicative of a lack of character and integrity, for which they are no less deserving of a knock on the head with knocking stick, at least. We're foolish if we think our kids are virgins with pure minds at that age; our pop culture and education system virtually preclude that possibility. That our Congressmen are no better, having been steeped in the same, should not shock us either.

It's "look in the mirror, america" time again.

I'm glad Foley had the sense to resign immediately, at least. Unlike certain other sicko politicians whom I won't mention anymore, who dug in and made everyone else feel like voyeurs for prying into his "private" life when, by federal guidelines he himself explained in a video just a few weeks before, he violated sexual harassment laws ten different ways from sunrise, in spirit if not also in letter, and his party rallied around him and made the country endure months of embarrassment for the sake of "the agenda, stupid".

No, I won't even mention any of that. :)

- Bob
