Thanks Malcolm. That's encouraging.

I mentioned the issue because when converting very large .docx files that 
contain multiple word tables to .doc using Open Office, I have sometime 
encountered problems with the table column widths getting mangled.

This may be in part due to the fact that the state bureaucrat who creates 
these monstrous files is more or less incompetent, such that the tables 
barely function in their native format. But still... Word always displays 
them exactly as they were created; Open Office does not always do so.

But again, .rtf may turn out to be sufficient. I hope so.
