Excuse me, but there was a time just a few years ago that nobody
believed a computer program could beat a chess expert/grandmaster - and
then came Deep Blue. Even if this success is arguable, the software is
still being developed, so it's a progression, always getting better.
Same for language translators - a long time coming, then better and
better until they actually work - and then exceed expectations. Maybe it
wouldn't be totally finished in a few years, but at least a serious
well-funded effort is underway. 

I think this is headed to become one of the greatest inventions of all
time. Bridging the communications barrier will help people to get to
know others they can't get to know today for the silly reason of a
language barrier. Assuming we want peace, the road to it is paved with
communications.
