When I was working with an Army program, we had "scrub" programs which would overwrite the disk over and over with zeros which made it unreadable by the enemy. But that can take hours, so at that time the only way to do it quickly was to attach it to explosives or thermite and detonate it to physically destroy the disk.

I am led to believe that they now have on board shredders to allow the airmen to pull drives out of the arrays and they are no longer readable.
