I checked for the print driver for the Brother HL 2170W using my Fedora
14 gnome printer configuration GUI, but it wasn't listed in the drop
down list. I visited Brother's website and did find it listed in their
available Linux drivers, though.

HP probable does the best job of supporting its printers in a Linux
environment of all the manufacturers. It was easy to install the driver
for the HP 1415 on Fedora 14 as follows:

yum install hplip

After using the above yum command the HP 1415 appeared in the gnome
printer configuration drop down list. Hopefully this would be all I
need to support all the HP printers in this particular HP line,
including printing and scanning files to my computer.

Many of the reviewers of the HP 1415 have criticized its speed, but it's
listed as printing 12 PPM, which isn't too bad, but the HP 1415 does
take 20 or 30 seconds to start printing. However, after it starts
printing it maintain a good pace. The HP 1415 is energy efficient, so
it cost almost nothing to operate when standing by, but it does take a
while to warm up when starting a print job from standby.

Also, the HP 1415 is an all-in-one printer, which includes print, copy,
scan and fax and can act as a stand along fax and copy machine. With
the HP 1415 I could retire my brothers fax machine and HP Laserjet 5P
printer and recover some space, and at my place space is at a premium. LOL

The HP 1415 has also been criticized as expensive to operate, (eg cost
per page), but I would have very little use for the color feature, if at
all, so I would only have to worry about the black toner cartridge, I
think. I'm not sure whether color cartridges must be replace in order
to continue printing black and white pages or not. Anyway, most of my
print jobs only cover about 5% to 10% of a page, (eg very little graphic
printing), so perhaps I could stretch the toner out beyond its 2000 page
claim. HP toner sets the standard in quality for clear, chirp output,
but it is somewhat more expensive than most others.
