I got a MythTV (http://www.mythtv.org) box set up over the Columbus
Day weekend and I'm having a lot of fun with it, but it does consume
disk space like it's going out of style. As the great Whil Hentzen
predicted years ago in a FoxTalk article, everyone will want a
terabyte server in their basement. I'm looking at alternatives to
beefing up the storage of the system to hold a two week's supply of
shows, and suspect I'll need a couple hundred gig at least. Shopping
at New Egg for SATA hard drives, Western Digital has a 500 Gb drive
for ~$ 180 USD, so striping a couple of these for storage seems pretty
feasible.

Since this is just recreational storage, backups aren't needed.

The plan is for a backend system in the lower level to capture the
videos, archive the CDs and DVDs, and a front end player (perhaps an
older laptop) in the living room as a component in the stereo rack to
feed video and audio.

Has anyone done this? Alternatively, have you set up NAS or a SAN for
access? Any pointers?
