It's really more the iPhone than the iPad... I don't know if it's better
than an android device, as I'm not blind myself and haven't evaluated
devices accordingly. I notice, though, that most of our blind or visually
impaired friends have an iPhone and not an android.

Maybe that's just the group of people I know. Maybe that's because the
iPhone was available earlier with sufficient applications. Maybe it's
because the device is the same everywhere which means you can take someone
else's iPhone and show them how to do certain things.

A bigger screen is definitely useful if you are not blind but visually
impaired. Our friends use color schemes and zoom level that look horrible
to me, but by holding the phone very close to their face they can actually
see something.

That's true. To put this in perspective, though, I've paid more on a single
MS VC++ 1.52 compiler upgrade than I've spent on iPhone/iPad apps in my
entire life. Considering everything else I pay and everything else I wasted
money on, the cost of apps isn't relevant for my decision to use one or the
other platform.
