It's really about cross platform compatibility in a world with so many Os(s), computer languages, hardware choices, and networks infrastructure choices. HTML has become a universal presentation, (eg visual language), that allows any browser, built to the agreed upon standard, to consume content, regardless of other underlying divides. Making HTML5 the official standard will be slow, due to politics and competing motives among the players, which prevents adoption of a feature until there is consensus from everyone involved. This usually only occurs after a feature is already being widely used and supported by all the major browsers. LOL
I was surprise at how long it takes for a standard, like HTML4 and HTML5, to become sanctioned. I believe the video mention 2022 as the target date for HTML5 to formally become the standard, but HTML5 is already being used today. HTML5 provides backwards compatible with earlier HTML to allow users to leverage their skills as the change to HTML5 takes place. This has not always been the Microsoft way of handling change.
