In the past we have had 2 Canon printer/scanners and the auto document feed broke on both. Canon refused to fix it even though they were still under the 1 year warrantee. We will never buy anything with a Canon brand again.
We've been using higher-end Canon scanners for several years. Not multi-function devices, just dedicated scanners. We have several Canon DR-2580c units that are used almost constantly to feed our network fax server. They take a few hundred pages a day, at 25 ppm.
They do wear out, eventually. The oldest one has been running about 6 years. It's been into a local repair shop a couple of times for new rollers and adjustments, once to replace a part that somebody cracked in half. I have several that have been in use for over 3 years without a hitch.
They are not cheap. Early on I learned that our staff could break a cheap sheet feeder within a matter of days--sometimes hours. These things will stand a lot of abuse and keep on running.
Unfortunately, the DR-2580c was recently discontinued. I bought a couple of the "recommended" replacements, the DR-M140, last month. We'll see how they do.
All of these come with "Capture Perfect" software for generating PDF or TIFF files, and the OCR for the PDFs is pretty good.
