I've never been anything but optimistic about VFP! The question as I see
it is whether VFP will do better one way or the other. Besides, wouldn't
you prefer to examine ideas from all sides, just as a matter of course?

I did mention a 'why', that VFP might not be 'detachable'.

Another concern I'd have with a buyout is whether the buyer would muck
with VFP as it is. Extending it is flat-out wonderful, but what if a
buyer thinks something that already works can no longer be supported, or
must be changed? Personally, I used too much time re-writing from FPD ->
VFP, so what's important to me is stability. Growth, sure, absolutely,
but not breakage.

The idea does have merit, though. And, as to the positives, at the least
it would be good to see it discussed and for VFP get some publicity.
There is also the possibility that a really good buyer would do wonders
for the product by promoting and extending it. Maybe even bring back
cross-platform! That would be FANTASTIC!

I hope I've better explained my feeling here.

But also true that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
How many times have we reinvented the same wheels? We could probably
count on 2 hands all the really major advances in computing since the
early days. One, of course, was the relational database. Implementations
have varied, but VFP does it well, and as they say, is feature rich and
mature. Best of all, it's extendable. Okay, so it wouldn't run on as
many machines as, say, Dabo <s>, but there are plenty that will run it.

Somewhere here I want to say that I haven't even begun to do all the
things I can do with VFP as it is. Sure, we are watching an endless
parade of alternatives, and they're all good, but I'm very happy with
the toolkit I've already got.

I'm feeling cautious right now, but open to ideas.
