To enable joining to a SAMBA NT-style domain in Win 7/Server 2008/Win 8/Server 2012, you need to create two new DWORDs as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManWorkstation\Parameters DomainCompatibilityMode=1 DNSNameResolutionRequired=0 Restart the machine and you can join the domain. Some references will say that you will get a spurious error message on the attempt to join but that it will work anyway. I did get that message on the first couple of Win 7 boxes I set up, but never again. I think some update, possibly SP 1 or perhaps earlier, fixed that.
