I don't think installing in program files is a problem at all. My programs
will install fine. But in my case I used to keep temp files there as well as
ini files. But 7/8 does not like that by default.

Yeah, an application can't write to anything that's inside \Program Files\ on Vista or 7 (haven't tried 8 yet). I've never tried the "manifest" route. You can also turn off virtualization in the local policies to get around this. Not typically an option for a bunch of remote users though. And I figure, MS is going to get increasingly hardcore about this so even one day putting programs in the root isn't going to work. I will eventually modify my system to play nice with %WhateverFolderMSWants% to, hopefully, solve this problem for a while.

The thing that gets me is, malware writers are not daunted by this at all. They can follow MS's rules about where to install stuff and still hose your machine. CryptoLocker runs from the user's %AppData% folder, for example. Imposing these restrictions is ultimately pointless.
