Hi Mike,

from this link:
http://superuser.com/questions/738131/disable-the-security-essentials-end-of-life-warning-on-windows-xp

and confirmed by my personal experience, remain with MSE:

- Download MSE from here http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=231274 and keep
it for later use.
- Uninstall MSE from Control panel.

- Select 'Automatic updates' and opt for the second possibility (download and
ask to install).

- Install the downloaded version of Security Essentials.
- The first time Windows Update asks you to update MSE, you say no and click
that you do not want to be bothered again about this update.

HTH,
Gianni

I have several "clients" (lots of older people who pay me for help with
home-made Apple pies, etc.) who are not only very happy with WinXP, they
have no intention of replacing it (due to lack of $.) A few years ago, I
switched all of them over to the Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) as
an anti-virus solution, because it is very un-obtrusive...and free.

Until now.

As you probably know, MSE now pops up a warning about end of
support...which has all my blue-haired gramma's, who just want to keep
getting emails with pix of their grandkids, in a tizzy.

So, all that to ask: What -free- anti-virus solutions are out there that
do not pop up constant ("constant" = once a month or more) solicitations
for subscribing? I'm aware of AVG, Avast, Kaspersky, McAfee, Avera,
Norton, Eset, Trend, etc. etc. etc...

Which is -free- and decent (not perfect) in performance?

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

And yes, I realize that they really really need to upgrade to Win7 or 8,
but I'm talking about clients who routinely have the audacity of dying
before baking my pie-payment! They don't have a spare $150 laying around
(and while I would love to switch them to Linux, they're comfortable
with Windows XP.)
