I use the paid Avast Internet Security version and recommend it to all my clients. It monitors many more services than the free version. You have to watch out though for free downloads of other software. They are going the way of most vendors by choosing the opt-in options and not making it clear on the installation menus.

Avast does not noticeably slow down the computer and checks for upgrades at boot-time and often during the day.
