Allen - in my Case - the 3D SW I use is so complex - its takes a while to load- thus, I put it and the OS on the SSD...

I do the same (data on HD, OS on SSD).

It's partly because of potential reliability problems, but also because SSDs 
are generally not available in large sizes.
SSDs are around 5x the price.
