Why wouldn't you host a virtual copy of Ubuntu until you learn the OS better
and decide that that is the route you want to go?  Your ability to recover
from mistakes would be much simpler. This is assuming that you have only one
box to work with. Yes, I know you coil host your Windows environment from
the Ubuntu box as well.
