1. Lots of memory, or the ability to add more at a reasonable price. 2. Backlit keyboard - most useful for those dark winter nights coding! 3. Bright screen - lots of laptops lack in the brightness department. 4. Ability to add an SSD in place of the existing CD (if possible) - Most of the Dell laptops (Inspiron & XPS) have available space and SSD carriers 5. Decent trackpad - if not then invest in a Logitech T650 Wireless Rechargeable Touchpad... all but damnit as good as the Apple trackpad. 6. Ability to upgrade the Hard Disk capacity at some stage in the future. 7. Decent keyboard - purely personal choice. 8. Cheaply available power supplies - You know that at some stage the original fitment one will go wrong or be damaged. 9. USB 3 - Many laptops still only have USB 2 as standard. 10. Built in HDMI output

Thanks all for your participation! OK, to summarize, we have: - a thumbs down for System76 components, especially keyboard, - thumbs-up for Dell Precision Workstations (btw, about $1200-$1500 for a refurb comparable to those previously posted) - recommendation for a Chromebook - recommendation for an MacBookPro - the usual dozen asides about backups, Apple bashing, giant USB tabs, etc. Before we exclaim "Sheep!" anyone else have a recommendation or insight into what they value in their development workstation? -- Ted Roche Ted Roche & Associates, LLC http://www.tedroche.com [excessive quoting removed by server] _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: [email protected] Subscription Maintenance: http://mail.leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://mail.leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/[email protected] ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
