I tried that last night - as I have - I thinks its Libre Office - but, it 
couldn't properly open it up either!

Try opening it in Open Office Writer. Open Office can frequently "fix" 
corrupted MS Office documents. If it opens in Writer, re-save it as an ordinary 
.doc (not .docx) file, and you should be good to go.
