First, of course, scan for malware.

If you have a copy of the document, try booting a machine into a LiveCd of 
Linux and reading it with LibreOffice/OpenOffice.org -- these are often more 
tolerant of variations in the format than MS.

Try renaming a copy to .doc, as docx wasn't that common in 2003, iirc.

Finally, docx is a ZIP file that contains manifest files and folders of XML 
files. There are 3rd party 'dump' programs that will let you read them, or just 
rename a copy .ZIP and have at it.
