Follow-up: I disabled 802.11ac on the 5 Ghz band on the router and the
laptop stabilized. Go ahead, you explain it.

A friend tells me that one of the "features" shipped in this month's
Monthly Update was a re-ordering of the priorities for accessing
protocols on the Wifi, and that might cause problems if your WiFi
adapter or router offers some protocols but they're not
well-implemented/broken.

Perhaps this clue might help someone.
