Thought I'd mention recent good experience with UltraVNC
http://www.uvnc.com/index.html

The current release has remote control, file transfer, a chat window ...
a solid set of basics that are needed for remote support.

The "trick" to installing/using it is in setting up the routers for port
forwarding, but once that's done it works perfectly. If the remote
machine is using DHCP to get IP's from their router, the IP assignment
(and therefore the router port target IP) can change, so that's a minor
glitch (if the target machine's IP is changed, the router port
forwarding has to change as well (so, obviously this works best if
target machines are setup with fixed IP's, but that's not always
possible, as happened in my case with this customer).

Here's a pretty good guide to configuring different routers:
http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm

I did try using the free version of logmein, which supports remote
control - but not file transfer (for that you need the "Pro" version
that comes with a monthly fee), and found it too difficult to work
with/around, so I decided to give UltraVNC a go. I've used basic VNC in
the past, but the current UltraVNC is more polished. For example, it
automatically compresses files to be transferred to speed up the
process.

So, I'm thrilled to get exactly what I need - and without a monthly
bill!
