A major example of what I'm saying, which I should have mentioned, is Bush's recent speech.
While listening to it, I found myself really wanting that, for each point he made, equal space existed - in that same space - for counter-points. In fact, I did come across one Internet-based writer, Stephen Zunes, who did exactly that, by annotating Bush's speech, at http://www.fpif.org/fpiftxt/3900, but it was Bush who had the captive audience of hundreds of millions of people, maybe even a billion or more, while Zunes counter-points response will reach only a tiny handful of people, because most people still look to the TV and not the Internet. So, "bring this on": an Internet fed TV that displaces, usurps and relegates the media barons to the history books, for people to study - but not live by. Let's be very careful on one thing: to not make the mistake of thinking this is the obvious and inevitable progression of events, without our making it so. Those in control of our information supply today will come up barrages of reasons for why this cannot and should not be done. Just this morning, I read an article about how insurgents in Iraq are using Google maps to aim their mortars, the obvious-but-unstated implication being that the Internet is helping our enemy, therefore it must be controlled to stop this from happening. It doesn't take a big imagination to see how many other similar examples can be plucked, and all of it notwithstanding that the war itself, and not the tactics used by our enemy, which of course will include the Internet, is the real problem.
