I'm betting it's the mySql odbc driver that is having the problems.
Just a gut feeling.
It's a low-level driver.
You (or your C++ buds) could recompile it on a dual core machine and see
if that makes any difference (or post on the mysql forums to see if anyone
has any technical input)
