I worked at a place where this happened(we lost irreplaceable data, however), and afterwards I kinda had to take an IT manager role, and the first item on the agenda, of course, was a "Backup AND RESTORE" strategy... Part of the strategy I drafted ensured regular restore audits of different parts of the backups, carried out by someone other than the person that did the backup(usually with that person present).
